Y’all know I’m a yarn addict, right?! I absolutely love to crochet! So when I initially moved to GA, I made sure I moved within a 5 mile distance of a popular big box hobby stores that sells a buttload of yarn. And then… one hot summer day, I was driving around town when I saw a sign appear off the highway like manna from the heavens! The yarn gods had shown their grace upon me!
The first Gem I’m going to drop on y’all in this installment of Hidden Hometown Gems (HHG), is to give a shout out to Mrs. Tena and her specialty store, YARNgins! Mrs. Tena opened YARNgins, the brick and mortar, in the summer of 2019 and it was a marvel of a marketplace where one could find yarn beyond acrylic or acrylic blends. You could walk in and find aisles of cotton yarn, t-shirt yarn, milk cotton yarn, cashmere yarn, corn yarn… you name it, she probably had it! Not only could you walk in and find “normal” and exotic skeins, Mrs. Tena was always warm, welcoming, and greeted you with a tone that made you believe she was excited to see you – ON PURPOSE!
Why YARNgins is an HHG
I’m not the final authority on brick and mortar yarn shops owned by Magical Black Women because I’m sure are lots, but Mrs. Tena was the first I’d ever encountered after living in 2 metropolitan areas in 2 different states (yep, I’ve been a couple of places 🙂 ).
Being Black-Owned isn’t the only reason YARNgins is an HHG. This place was amazing! YARNgins’ prices were/are comparable to the big box hobby stores and the inventory surpassed/s them! She offered beginner crochet classes and if you had a question about products or needed anything yarn, crochet, or knitting related, Mrs. Tena would show up and show out with an answer to your question or provide you with the product you need.
Mrs. Tena created a Hidden Hometown Gem at YARNgins where people could come in, sit down, and create glorious knit or crocheted projects in the store while sipping tea and enjoying the day. I looked forward to shopping and visiting with Mrs. Tena at YARNgins and watching the business of a magical melanin-rich crochet master grow!
And then COVID happened…
Mrs. Tena chose to close the brick and mortar, but you can find this Hidden Hometown Gem and all her MacNificent inventory online!
YARNgins is still JUMPIN’!
That’s right! She moved everything to the interwebs, so now everyone has access. YARNgins’ inventory is still amazing! My favorite yarn from YARNgins is Zpaghetti T-Shirt yarn and you could get 10% off your purchase of t-shirt yarn by using the coupon code MAC10.
I encourage you to check out YARNgins on all social media platforms and you can go to the YARNgins website here. Contact Mrs. Tena to find out where she ships.
