So… You’ve been invited to a Juneteenth cookout and you have no idea what to make. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I’ve included some recipes that are easy and will be a hit with the crowd.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth originated out of Texas in 1865 and it’s celebrated every year on June 19th. It commemorates the day enslaved African Americans found out they were free. This was 2 years AFTER the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Unfortunately, news doesn’t always travel fast.

What recipes do you have, Shauna Mac?
4 goodies that your family, friends, or random acquaintances will enjoy.

First, we have sweet potato cupcakes! Go on and ignore the Christmas décor. You can whip these up in no time and your people will be glad you did.

Next up, slow cooker Mississippi pot roast. This is that dish you can start early in the morning and it will be done by the time the cookout begins. You just add a few ingredients, turn on the slow cooker, and you’re done!

It’s sweet tea, that’s really all I need to say. You can leave it as it is or make an adult version and add honey flavored liquor. Either way you do it, you can never have enough sweet tea!

Finally, we have sweet potato jacks that are a Southern delicacy and definitely soul food. They’re easy to make and people will ask you make them for every special occasion.
Use 1 or all 4 of these recipes to take to your Juneteenth cookout. You won’t get the side eye for showing up with a lame dish.
